Have you ever heard that the best day to get started with something is "today"? Well it is. We're half way through this year and any day can be the start of something new, something exciting, something unexpected.

We've got an easy new habit for you. Consider the Farmers' Market as a weekend destination this year. Not only for buying fresh local food but also to see fresh local faces. Our community is ever-changing and it's exciting to see and meet the faces you already know and the new faces that are joining us. Many times new residents show up at the farmers' market just days after they've moved here.

This new habit may mean that you come to shop, it may be that you just come with a friend for a fresh cup of coffee or a smoothie that you can enjoy in the sun or shade in a relaxing environment. Do you like to be in the center of the bustle? Choose a picnic table in the center of the action. If you prefer a quiet corner to share a conversation, there are plenty of those on the grounds too.

Did you know that the Farmers' Market is actually located on the Exhibition Grounds that have been dedicated to local agriculture and livestock? We share this parkland with Therapeutic Riding and Trail Riders as well. The Exhibition Grounds have been a part of our community for a very long time. Come on up and enjoy them with us every Saturday from 10:30 - 12:30 and Sundays from 12:30 - 2:30.

The market has a lot of new vendors this year, some are woodworkers, florists and farmers. We've got a few more food vendors and bakers joining us in the coming weeks as well. The market focuses on seasonal eating so be sure to come and enjoy what's ripe and ready week by week.

Powell River Farmers' Markethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08802582410679158986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7537964960836827.post-69630930897624597622023-05-09T13:36:00.002-07:002023-05-20T07:56:13.059-07:00The promise of Spring

<div class="separator" left="" style="clear: both><span style=;" text-align:="">Some seasons come to us in full force and others kind of tease their way into existence. This spring has been one of those on-again, off-again seasons where bright, warm sunny days spring us into action to get our gardens ready, get our plants out and hope for an early start to the season, just to be met with cold and freezing temperatures, and even snow this year in late April. Our first work party to get the market grounds ready met us with a dusting of snow, we had to ask volunteers to rake leaves and trust that they were under the snow.
<div class="separator" left="" style="clear: both><span style=;" text-align:="">

<div class="separator" left="" style="clear: both><span style=;" text-align:="">

Now, a couple of weeks into May and a warm week upon us, we are truly convinced that the spring is upon us. Buds and blossoms have been punching their way through the dormancy of winter and the season of new beginnings is proving it's arrival. The delicate greens on maples and alders as they grab their first rays of sunshine on their delicate leaves provide a refreshing backdrop to the evergreens that have kept us grateful to live in a rainforest during our darker winter months.

The farmers' market has moved outdoors and after our first weekend in May, it's evident that the farmers are already in full work mode. We have seen an abundance of greens, asparagus, rhubarb, and even some over-wintering cauliflower. Next up will be the bright red of radishes and then the ever-changing excitement of fresh produce will continue to impress us every week.

A special thanks to the supportive community members and committed vendors who made our fall and winter season such a success. We were open every Sunday in the Quonset hut from October to April. It was the 3rd year of being a year-round market and everyone benefited.

Things happening this season at the market for kids/teens:

Train rides every Sunday

Orca Bus every 2nd Saturday

Library Storytime once a month, the first Saturday in July & August.

Kids market every Sunday - kids under 16 can come and sell their hand-made crafts. Contact Emily at the market 604-414-3327 at least 24 hours in advance to attend.

Student Buskers are welcome to setup and play near the entrance. We have a designated area for them to play. Buskers must schedule their spots with Emily at the market 604-414-3327 at least 24 hour in advance.

The annual launch of the Nutrition Coupon Program will start in June. Our community partners: BOND (Babies Open New Doors), Family Place, The Tla'amin Pre/Post Natal Program and Gerry Gray Place will be distributing the coupons. The market does not provide the coupons, instead we are the location where the coupons can be spent. If you'd like more information on this program check out the BCAFM Website.

Remember that there are plenty of ways to get to to the market including the Zunga Bus, who will drop you off at the back entrance (Myrtle Ave).

We are working on getting some great music lined up on the main stage. We enjoyed Jack and Annabelle performing together as well as Ghostly Hounds. We have an open mic stage and everyone is welcome to come up and perform a set (typically 3-4 songs or 15 minutes).

If you're looking for a cup of coffee and a little snack or a good solid lunch, there are plenty of great food vendors this year. Well, the buck stop in one spot. Every fresh, tasty product is thanks to all the efforts put in by a single farmer.

Local farmers in qathet and Powell River take pride in their land, the resources they manage and the products they grow. In a small town, word of mouth gets around, especially about what we eat.

We have an amazing growing season and for many years local farmers have committed to producing food for our community year-round. What does that mean? For our community, it means that there's an easy way to focus on local food: find a farmer and buy from them before you go to the grocery store. This could mean stocking up on what is in season and preserving it to enjoy year-round, it could also mean finding farmers and other local food producers who dehydrate, can or freeze local produce and meat.

If you're not sure where to start, come to the farmers' market and meet local farmers who have all kinds of wonderful local food from asparagus to zucchini.
While we're operating under a new set of guidelines the market still has a lot to offer.

April and May will be full of delicate, fresh greens, beets, radishes, rhubarb and other early producers like asparagus and green onions. The market also has plant starts to help jump-start your garden. The local farmers will be joined by our bakers and other pre-packaged prepared food vendors. Find your favourite breads or sweets at the hands of these talented locals.

June sees the addition of some additional vendors, as the BC Centre for Disease Control is allowing markets to add additional non-food vendors. We'll be welcoming back soap vendors and florists to start and later some of our crafters.
Physical distancing is in effect, everyone needs to be sure they keep a safe distance from each other. While we've been lucky to not see a major outbreak here we are seeing visitors coming from the lower mainland, BC and Alberta already. There will be signs up to help remind you as well. We've got some safety lines setup in front of booths to help keep our vendors safe and a dedicated entrance and exit to allow everyone to keep their distance as they come and go.
We have hand sanitizer available and a handwash station is open in the food barn along with our bathrooms as well. Our focus is "shop, don't stop". We want you to come and find everything you need without rushing but then head out. Right now we're not a social gathering spot (we all miss that) so you won't see any chairs, picnic tables, kids play area or train rides. Vendors are in every other booth and we try to keep line-ups out of the walking pathways.

If you're worried about selection then you can always try our new online farmers' market to let you order ahead of time (by noon Thursday) for weekend pickup, then there's no need to rush and you can pay online so it's just a matter of coming to pick up your purchases.

We are accepting cash at the market, some vendors can process credit and debit cards, for those who can't the INFO booth can always help with those transactions.

Your local food producers are the cornerstone of food security. Join us, enjoy the outdoors and see some friendly faces waiting to share their bounty with you.
Work Party:
We also have a work party a few weeks before opening to get the grounds cleaned up. Everyone is welcome to come, adults, kids, and well-behaved dogs. It's always a great time for a bit of work, great conversations and some shared pizza and treats. There have been a few big branches that have come down and a fair bit of leaves that need raking. We wash the booths and clean the food barn from top to bottom.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">The community partner manages the registration and distribution of the nutrition coupons. Participants bring the coupons to the farmers' market and purchase the fresh, local products they need. Farmers accept the coupons and cash them in at the end of the day. Last year this project allowed close to $10,000 worth of sales to occur at the market. It is (conservatively) estimated that this money cycles through our community at least 2 to 3 more times as locals continue to buy local. This year there is an increase in the number of participants as well as the amount participants receive, $21 this year as opposed to $15 in previous years. Local fundraising has also been put in place to allow the support of seniors in this program.
If you join us at the market on the weekends, you will see a representative from the food bank at our market each day. This representative provides information to the community while the market is open and once the market closes, collects donations from local farmers and bakers who have produce, eggs, baking or frozen meat available for donation. The farmers are able to claim up to 25% of the total value of the donation as a charitable tax deduction.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">This has allowed local farmers and bakers to give fresh, nutritious food to the food bank who then, in turn, distributes it to their participants during the week. It has only been in the last couple of years that the food bank has had the ability to receive and store food in cold storage, allowing items like produce and eggs to keep until their distribution date.
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">The feedback from the community has been spectacular! Families that require the help of the food bank are delighted to find fresh greens, half a box of fresh eggs or some fresh baking in their allotments. This is one more way that a local community partnership supports food security in Powell River, connects local people with what is grown locally and helps reduce spoilage or waste.
Boomerang Bags is a grassroots, community-driven movement tackling plastic pollution at its source.
For over a year volunteers have gathered at Fibrespace to make re-useable ‘boomerang bags’ using recycled materials, as a means to provide a sustainable alternative to plastic bags.
The bags are available for use at the farmers' market from a large wooden bin. As a plastic bag alternative that can be used, reused and returned. The bags not only provide a convenient option to shoppers but also start conversations and bring awareness to our actions towards a sustainable future.

Local advocate Lesley Thorsell has been the catalyst behind making Boomerang Bags a reality in Powell River. We are so pleased to offer them at the market.
These are a few examples of community partnerships that have helped our market grow, thrive and add new connections within our town. Our sense of community grows stronger as we come together, help eachother, support eachother and share in passions that take ideas and create a community-centric solution that supports our growth, health, and longevity.
Choosing flowers
By offering consistent sources of pollen, bees will routinely visit your garden until winter. The Honey Bee Conservancy has these great tips for helping these important pollinators:

Plant native flowers. Find out what flowering plants are native to your area. They will be particularly hardy and draw local bees. Contact your local extension office for good choices in your growing area.

Single flowers. Single, simple flowerheads will produce more pollen than more elaborate flowerheads. For a bonus, plan on perennial plants which come back year after year.

Some great fall-blooming choices with single blooms would be:

Black-eyed Susan

Japanese Anemone

Sunflower

Tickseed

Keep blooms coming. Think about when individual plants flower. Plan for blooms from early spring through late fall. For example, offer crocuses in spring, cosmos in summer, and sedum in the fall. HoneyLove has a handy list of plants that draw bees and their bloom times.

Consider containers. If you don’t have a full size garden, even container gardening helps bees. Follow the same guidelines for selecting your plants.

Besides blooms
In addition to flowers, there are other things you can do for bees to keep them happy in your garden. Here are some important points to consider:

Avoid chemicals. Skip the chemical pesticides because they often kill good bugs in addition to pests.

Thirsty bees. Offering a water source to bees will draw them to your garden. Allow a few shallow mud puddles to be available for the bees. This way the bees will get salt and minerals from the soil when they drink.

Add trees and shrubs
Adding a few well-chosen trees and shrubs to your landscape provides interest throughout the year. Those same plants can also assist in drawing bees to your garden. Here are some selections that will both look fabulous through the seasons and offer food for the bees.

Hydrangeas. Consider including hydrangeas in your landscape as a plant that is attractive year round. Professionals explain that these shrubs are easy to grow and typically begin blooming in early spring and keep going into late summer. When the growing season is winding down they maintain their sturdy blooms throughout the winter months, providing beautiful texture and interest.

Pagoda dogwoods. Experts note that pagoda dogwoods are an especially nice tree for specimen planting. They are worthy as a focal point because they lend interest to the garden all year. These small, ornamental trees have an elegant, asymmetrical branch growth. Pagoda dogwoods have flowers in spring followed by bluish-black berries in summer. Leaves are dark green and turn yellow or red in the fall. When the foliage drops the graceful form of the tree gives winter interest in the garden.

Ninebarks. Ninebarks offer attractive foliage in a variety of colors, depending on the cultivar. Their springtime blooms attract bees and other pollinators. Leaves typically turn brilliant colors in fall, then drop to reveal the peeling bark which gives the plant its name. Experts note that this shrub is easy to maintain and is drought tolerant once established.

Your haven for the honey bees
By making some simple additions to your garden this fall, you can keep bees coming throughout the growing seasons. Plant flowers that will blossom in spring, summer and fall. Remember to also help bees by avoiding chemicals and offering them a water source. Adding well-chosen trees and shrubs can provide food for bees and bonus beauty in winter. By incorporating these simple tips, your garden will be a haven for the honey bees.
The bees, in turn, extract nectar and pollen from flowers, using these substances as sustenance. It truly is a two-way street, so it is a wonder that more gardeners do not employ tactics meant to keep bees present year-round.

The aim is to attract bees already in your garden’s vicinity, which means that these native bees must be lured by native plants. The local nursery or botanical garden will have information about which plants are native to your respective climate and region, so use this advice as a guide when shopping for seeds and flowers.

As pollinators, their role in the production of food to be consumed by humans is a critical one. It does not take much effort to plant a garden that will attract and feed bees, and the benefits to the gardener are well worth employing a strategy to attract these valuable insects. If you were already planning or have a garden, employ these minor tweaks to make it a buzzing ground for our winged friends.
