Fall and Winter

Image
As the summer season wraps up, the market shifts into it's 5th fall and winter season. From October to April we will be open on Sundays from 12:30 - 2:30pm, same great location, just inside our Quonset Hut. Join us for another season of local fresh produce.  We will have frozen berries and meats as well as a great selection of winter vegetables.  During the first month we'll have many local farms still attending and as we migrate into November and December we promise to keep local farms front and center at the market.  There will always be something green to buy, as long as the chickens are happy they will lay eggs and we're even adding Seed to Soul Farm with winter produce this year and Hammill Hill Farm will have honey. In addition to our farmers we have a very strong baking community at the market this year.  Come and find your favorite bakers with your favorite treats, breads, cakes, cinnamon buns, you get the idea. We will have food for you to eat, hot cof...

Approaching Summer

Image
Local farmers and gardeners alike enjoyed a decent spring.  The fruit trees in a many parts of qathet have started setting fruit.  The stone fruit seems to have bloomed right in time for the bees with cherries being the first fill bowls and buckets and garner smiles. If you enjoy harvesting wild berries I'm sure you've been keeping an eye on the blackberry bushes in your neighbourhood or maybe even the huckleberries.  The small trailing blackberries are coming ripe in areas as are the huckleberries. Farms are seeing the bright colours of strawberries, radishes, beets, greens, cabbages and more coming to market.  Every week the inventory changes and eating local has never been easier with so many local farm stands in both urban and rural neighbourhoods.  Facebook groups are always a good place to find or sell some eggs or extra greens.  Our community does a great job of sharing and making local food accessible.   Remember that we're open every Satu...

Spring is here

Image
It's been a cooler start this spring and preliminary reports show that we will have reasonable summer while the rest of the country will be battling heat. If you need some tasty freshness in your life right now, locally grown produce is the most nutrient-rich and nutrient dense way to fill your body with the vitamins and minerals we all crave.  How about adding a tasty snap to your salads with colourful radishes, grated beets, microgreens and locally grown salad mixes.  Add a hard boiled local egg and you've got a quick and easy meal ready to go. If you prefer others to do the prep work, how about some wonderful frozen food to take home?  The variety never ceases to change and within a few minutes you can build an easy-to-enjoy lunch or dinner.

When is the Outdoor Market Opening?

Image
We're excited to announce our outdoor opening weekend as  May 4 & 5, 2024 . Here's a quick reminder of our operating hours If you've not been to our market before, we're always excited to welcome new shoppers or new community members, stop by the INFO booth and say hello.   If you don't like crowds, come during the 2nd hour which is always a bit quieter than the first hour.   We do ask that you leave your pets at home but there are several shady areas to park if they insist on coming with you. If you'd like to be a vendor with us this year, please see our vendor registration page .  Set aside about 15 minutes to review all the information.  It's always an exciting place to be in the spring and summer as we watch our community assemble and build stronger relationships.  No car?  No problem.  A city bus can get you as far as the airport and if you're up for a little walk that may be a great option.  The Zunga Bus is also a...

SNOW DAY

Half year habit

Image
New Year's resolutions seem to be a focus for many people when the year rolls around.  Have you ever heard that the best day to get started with something is "today"?  Well it is.  We're half way through this year and any day can be the start of something new, something exciting, something unexpected. We've got an easy new habit for you.  Consider the Farmers' Market as a weekend destination this year.  Not only for buying fresh local food but also to see fresh local faces.  Our community is ever-changing and it's exciting to see and meet the faces you already know and the new faces that are joining us.  Many times new residents show up at the farmers' market just days after they've moved here.    This new habit may mean that you come to shop, it may be that you just come with a friend for a fresh cup of coffee or a smoothie that you can enjoy in the sun or shade in a relaxing environment.  Do you like to be in the center of the bustle?...

The promise of Spring

Image
Some seasons come to us in full force and others kind of tease their way into existence.  This spring has been one of those on-again, off-again seasons where bright, warm sunny days spring us into action to get our gardens ready, get our plants out and hope for an early start to the season, just to be met with cold and freezing temperatures, and even snow this year in late April.    Our first work party to get the market grounds ready met us with a dusting of snow, we had to ask volunteers to rake leaves and trust that they were under the snow.   Now, a couple of weeks into May and a warm week upon us, we are truly convinced that the spring is upon us.  Buds and blossoms have been punching their way through the dormancy of winter and the season of new beginnings is proving it's arrival.  The delicate greens on maples and alders as they grab their first rays of sunshine on their delicate leaves provide a refreshing backdrop to the evergreens that have k...

Top 5 reasons we're still so strong!

Image
Our Farmers' Market has been operating since 1987, that gives us 36 years under our belt. We are inspired by all the people that help make every market a success. That includes YOU! Line up at Andtbaka Farm People are at the heart of everything we do. Support from local farmers and vendors: we rely on the participation of local farmers and vendors to provide a variety of fresh, locally-sourced products to our customers.  Community engagement: we function as a community hub, providing a space for people to gather, socialize, and connect with their local food system.   Promoting sustainable agriculture: we prioritize products that are grown using sustainable practices, which helps support local farmers and preserves the environment.   Flexibility: For our first 33 years we were a spring and summer market only. Now we're rolling through our 3rd season of being open during the late fall and winter too, making us a year-round market. In the summer we're open on S...

From Seed to Sold

Image
Buying from local farmers means you're buying from the hand that planted, protected, nurtured and harvested what you're eating. Why is this important?  Well, the buck stop in one spot.  Every fresh, tasty product is thanks to all the  efforts put in by a single farmer.   Local farmers in qathet and Powell River take pride in their land, the resources they manage and the products they grow.    In a small town, word of mouth gets around, especially about what we eat.   We have an amazing growing season and for many years local farmers have committed to producing food for our community year-round.  What does that mean?  For our community, it means that there's an easy way to focus on local food:  find a farmer and buy from them before you go to the grocery store.  This could mean stocking up on what is in season and preserving it to enjoy year-round, it could also mean finding farmers and other local food producers who dehydr...

Connecting while staying 2 meters apart

Image
This year things look and feel a bit different but one thing that hasn't changed is the quality and availability of fresh, local food. While we're operating under a new set of guidelines  the market still has a lot to offer. April and May will be full of delicate, fresh greens, beets, radishes, rhubarb and other early producers like asparagus and green onions.  The market also has plant starts to help jump-start your garden.  The local farmers will be joined by our bakers and other pre-packaged prepared food vendors.  Find your favourite breads or sweets at the hands of these talented locals. June sees the addition of some additional vendors, as the BC Centre for Disease Control is allowing markets to add additional non-food vendors.   We'll be welcoming back soap vendors and florists to start and later some of our crafters. So what's different?   Physical distancing is in effect, everyone needs to be sure they keep a safe distance fro...
